Palitana

Since my post of I have been inundated with links to sites on Jainism that people have sent me. The best of these is http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/8456435.stm which shows pictures of Palitana which is a major Jain pilgrimage site and one of the most fascinating places in India.

Marvellous. The more I read of Jainism the more I like it. I particularly like their attitude to animals which has always been a downside to the Theravada approach

Is this also a heritage site like Angkor, Borobudur? I am quite amused by the commentary towards the end "like Buddhism ... Jain is also ...". Since Jain predates Buddhism, it should be the other way round. I should think that Buddhism has Jainism in its foundation because the ascetics of ancient India were probably more diverse, from many different schools of thoughts. The Buddha himself was one, lived with many, agreed and disagreed with many, and finally came to his own thoughts - which I think were what was acceptable and rejected those that were not (esp. Brahmanism).
