However, on the subject of the origins of the name Himalaya, I suspect the mountains werenamed centuries before people worried too much about the niceties of grammar and that the explanations came later.Shravasti Dhammikahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06246408068143301108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1012277645322483593.post-36625657563681317432008-08-26T22:11:00.000-07:002008-08-26T22:11:00.000-07:00Dear Venerable,As Andy says a very interesting and...Dear Venerable,

As Andy says a very interesting and valuable post. I have some corrections to make though.

"...may have been formed from the words hima and mala..."

In which case the word would be Himamala. The correct form is hima and alaya, giving himaalaya, with a long middle aa (often mispronounced by Westerners).

"...five monk[s] led by the arahat Majjhima were sent to the Himalayan region to spread the Dhamma (Mahavamsa XII,6)"

Actually only Majjhima is mentioned as going to the Himalaya. Five monks are mentioned as accompanying Mahinda to Lanka.

"...the records do not tell us which part of the region Majjima and his companions went although it was probably either Kashmir or the Kathmandu Valley."

Majjhantika is specifically mentioned as going to Kashmir, so we can be sure Majjhima did not go there, but the Kathmandu Valley is a good guess.

For a translation of the relevant passage from Mahavamsa see: http://www.ancient-buddhist-texts.net/Maps/Map-12-Asokan-Missions.htmAnandajotihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11976447022896538872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1012277645322483593.post-76577702969676759462008-08-26T12:20:00.000-07:002008-08-26T12:20:00.000-07:00Dear Venerable Sir, as always a very interesting p...Dear Venerable Sir,
as always a very interesting post, many thanks for it and the others.
best wishes

andrewAndyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06794237044265280965noreply@blogger.com
