Very intersting article, but slightly inaccur...Hi,

Very intersting article, but slightly inaccurate in at least one place:

"... in Umayyad times Muslims did not need to pay taxes."

Let's be honest about that sentence. What it means is that, as was always the case after Muslim invasion, non-Muslims were taxed.

The special taz on non-Muslim is called the jizya. And alongside that non-Muslims in many societies also had to pay higher land taxes than Muslims, caled kharaj.

These taxes have their legal basis in the Koran:

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (Sura 9:29).

I's not a case of Muslims not needing to pay tax. It's a case of non-Muslims being taxed by Mulism societies in an effort to subdue the non-Muslim peoples of encourage them to convert.

Of course this is all just history, but perhaps it does have some bearing on the situation today?

Three days ago three Buddhists here in Thailand were killed, and one was then burned in the middle of the street in front of on-lookers, by jihadist militants operating on just the sort of extremist ideology such a history has produced:

http://www.thenews.com.pk/updates.asp?id=86723

I have no idea how to solve these terible problems, but whitewashing examples of Islamic extremism out of history is not the answer.

If moderate Mulsims and those who support them are to solve the problem of Jihadim and Islamic Supremicism, then a truthful, if uncomfortable, look at history is surley part of the process?

Wishing peace and happiness to all,

MarcusAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1012277645322483593.post-25307140342975804252009-09-11T02:40:05.644-07:002009-09-11T02:40:05.644-07:00I am of the opinion that muslims did not plan or ...I am of the opinion that muslims did not plan or accomplish the 11/9 bombing event, they were not cabaple of such things, accidentally in the year 1999 I found out that in Afghanisthan there was at that time around 500 telephones and their telephone numbers had all 5 digits, a country at that level of backwardness does not believe even what exists in India! they were drawn into this bombing event because the U.S. needed a suitable enemy, the real agency behind the attack is still unknown to the general public, and plenty of confusion has been spread over the matter, all this is beside the point of the article, but may be it comes in to light some day in future ?Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18167608291735766377noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1012277645322483593.post-5036296343907329662009-09-09T03:03:48.106-07:002009-09-09T03:03:48.106-07:00This link to the conference might be helpful: http...This link to the conference might be helpful: http://numata-conference.mcgill.ca/

This connection is the subject, in part, in the mystery novel Water Touching Stone by Eliot Pattison.

Enjoy and be well.dmkormanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04238884831751390040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1012277645322483593.post-76088564900789839332009-09-07T16:42:58.313-07:002009-09-07T16:42:58.313-07:00Dear Lt Shin,
