The AWARE Saga - A Buddhist View

Singapore is a pretty boring place. By 'boring' I mean no school massacres, no 'no-go areas', no corruption scandals, no gang warfare and not much crime. Even elections are low-key, unexciting and predictable affairs. But of late Singaporeans have been treated to a bit of real excitement. People are talking about it, it is getting wide coverage in the media and the internet is positively humming with opinions about it. And because all the excitement has a religious element to it I'm dealing with it on my blog today. I will return to the promised subject of the five and ten Precepts in two days.
For 26 years an organization called AWARE has promoted women's rights, birth control, lesbian self-respect, everything you would expect from a modern progressive women's advocacy group. Last month AWARE had their annual general meeting and to everyone's astonishment a large group of members who had only joined during the previous month, voted out all the old members and took over. Interesting in itself, but even more interesting is that six of the 11 new office-bearers all just happen to be members of the same religious organization. In its reporting of this matter the media has mentioned the new offices holders' have a particular 'religious affiliation', that they have a 'faith-based' outlook and that 'certain beliefs' are involved, seemingly unable to bring themselves to actually use the word – Christian; or more precisely, fundamentalist Christian; or to be exact the Church of Our Savior.
Now the Church of Our Savior is - how can I put this? - let's just say that a guy with a beard and turban hiding in a cave in Afghanistan is a moderate by comparison. On the side-bar of the church's web site, the fourth item after 'Home', 'Welcome' and 'About Our Church' is 'Position Statement on Homosexuality' so presumably what homosexuals do in the privacy of their own bedrooms is of particular interest to the COS. The church even run an operation called Choice Ministries which 'cures' homosexuals. Apparently COS also has close links with the controversial Hillsong Church in Perth, Australia, characterized by its many critics, including Christian critics, as having an abusive, cohesive, mind-control approach to religion (see http://dogemperor.livejournal.com/147779.html). I always refer to these types of setups as Taklakamakan churches - 'go in, can't get out'.
The new AWARE committee have publicly stated that they did not know each other previous to their election, that they haven’t yet decided whether there will be new policies on gender issues, and that they intend to keep their religious views in the background. Many people in Singapore of late have reported seeing pigs flying. After all this got in the papers, the new committee appointed the mother of a former MP as its 'feminist mentor'. Within days, alleged 'private and confidential' emails between this woman and some of the new committee appeared on the internet and these suggest very strongly that there had been a carefully planned, religiously motivated, conspiracy to take over AWARE because of its stance on matters relating to sexuality.
Religious fundamentalists of all persuasions are pretty much the same, aren't they? While claiming to promote the highest moral standards, they are quite willing to use underhand, dubious or even immoral means to promote those standards. Typically, they also want to impose those standards on everyone else.
Because of their excellent organizational abilities and fierce determination, fundamentalist Christians in Singapore have a profile and an influence far beyond their numbers. If your neighbor, fellow student, boss, work colleague, local shopkeeper or the driver of the taxi you just hired, is a fundamentalist, you'll know it because he or she will very soon tell you. They may even tell you so often that you start to feel as if you are being verbally harassed. And they are very determined to use each and every opportunity to promote their particular view of things. Some observers maintain that they are also prepared to do almost anything to stifle or suppress opposing or different views.
Whether the AWARE saga turns out to be an example of this, we should know within a few days. The ousted committee has called an extraordinary general meeting for the 2nd of May and both sides are urging sympathizers to quickly join AWARE, attend the extraordinary general meeting and give their support. 1. Wow. I could go for boring. I live in the Bible Belt where a church is almost on every corner. Of course, I use to be one of those fundamentalists always being a witness and standing up for Jesus (apparently he can't stand up for himself). Now, though I'm not an intentional witness for Buddhism, I make an effort not to tell anyone unless they pry it out of me (I sheepishly admit that my own wife didn't find out until six months after I took refuge, but that's another story), especially since I work with a couple of fundamentalists who are over me and if they ever found out that I was Buddhist they would make my job hell.

If I was single and didn't have a kid I would complain that you should have a monastery for those who wish to pursue a scholar-monk path. Then I'd so be there. Ah... attachments.

  2. Dear dhamma

You are the wasabi in an otherwise boring dish of sashimi. Without you, it will just be raw fish.

After reading about Hillsong, I realised that my fears of a religious fundamentalist/extremist controlled NGO were not only justified, but growing my the minute.

Just look at how they treated Ted Haggard after they found out he was/is gay. Now the poor dude is out of job, is pretending to be heterosexual, has children and a wife who should be very much confused about their realities.

So much for forcing Re-education down the throats of homosexuals. That to me is no different from the regime of DPRK.

  3. I was a passionate born again Christian when I was in my teens to 20s. When I started working after Uni, I observed so many unfairness in life which no pastor could answer - why some ppl are born poor, handicapped, possess melancholic/manic/hot tempered personalities, face so much bad luck, why some so rich, some bad ppl still live good lives etc.etc.etc.

I can't accept the reason given to me that God is the potter, we are the clay, so we can't complain if God choose to make us lowly despised pieces of crockery instead of Ming vase. And if I am made with a inherent hot tempered personality, for example, I will go to hell when I get angry and that's God's destiny for me.

God is supposed to be loving and forgiving, but throughout the Bible, I see so often, a violent, vengeful and unforgiving God who is biased and protective towards one race (Jews) and towards certain chosen individuals only. The rest are treated like filth and dirt even though they are supposed to be his creation too.

One day, I stumbled upon some good Buddhist books by Dr Sri Dhammananda and Dharma Master Cheng Yen (of TzuChi). Buddhism makes so much sense to me, no more blid faith. I am grateful for this wonderful truth shown by Buddha. I am still learning everyday with a whole lot more peace, tolerance, contentment and understanding of life.

I'd also like to thank you,bro Dhammika, for your inspirational writings too, especially the Good Question, Good Answer.
May you be well and have a nice day.

  5. Thank you for your insightful comments about this. As a former AWARE volunteer who no longer lives in Singapore, I have been following these events with dismay.

For me, two things are particularly upsetting. The first is the lack of honesty and trust shown by those church members who became the new executive committee, both before and after the election. Are those 'values' going to be part of the new "wind beneath her wings" mentoring programme for young women the new president highlighted as part of the new direction for AWARE? Is that the moral example they want young women to follow?

The second is the horror the new leaders expressed at the idea that the term 'homosexuality' should be a 'neutral' term in sex education workshops for teenagers, as if the mere mention or discussion of homosexuality in a neutral way would send those poor teenagers on a slippery slope to hell. I think of the relief to that percentage of students in those workshops who were gay to have the topic raised without feeling damned, and don't like to think of the alternative workshop given by fundamentalist Christians.
What is it again, "Love the sinner, hate the sin"? Great message for the self-respect of a scared teenager, isn't it?

  6. Dear Shravasti Dhammika,

Your blog post is a blast of common sense and good faith (truly good Buddhism) on the Aware case. I read the Bible when I was young and by Genesis, I could not understand why some people loved a faith where women are treated like spare ribs, as a chunk of a man. Now out sprouts more evil that affects us.

You and the Buddhist faith, is what makes me, inspired to understand and love the dharma.

    Thank you.

  9. Hi Shravasti Dhammika,

I followed several of your articles and find them insightful.

Although I don't consider myself a buddhist, but I am still deeply influenced by many of the buddhist beliefs.

However, I would like to differ on the following statement in your post:

"If your neighbor, fellow student, boss, work colleague, local shopkeeper or the driver of the taxi you just hired, is a Christian, you'll know it because he or she will very soon tell you."I do not know if this is just a tongue-in-cheek, because even if so, this is a very generalized statement on Christian in general.

On my personal experience in SG context, the only type of Christian that fit your description are those from the charismatic churches. I have numerous Christian friends, however most of them (those that are not from the megachurches) are relatively private about their beliefs. They do not actively evangelize, and only share their belief if you actively ask for it.

It is the evangelistic Christians that are damaging the image of Christian in general.

I just feel that it is not right to give the readers a "false" impression on Christian in general, unless you make it very very obvious that it is intended as a joke.

Because it might encourage stereotyping, and unjustified discrimination against Christians.

    My 2 cents.

    Regards,
    ~ William

  11. It's disgusting how this horde of women will resort to lying to achieve their aim - "the end justify the means" seems to be their motto.
What is disgraceful to every self-respecting Christian is the way they planned the hijack of the AWARE Exco - they could have easily set up their own "Anti-AWARE" society but no, they have to takeover a respected secular organization which doesn't share their religious point of view.
These "christians" are so anxious about going to heaven that they make our earth a hell - if they're going to heaven, I'd rather be in hell!
I'm a baptized Christian too but I do find Buddha's Teachings to be more relevant and compassionate to our lives and suffering.

  12. Dear Eterna2
If you read the last sentence before the passage you quote, you would have seen that I am referring to fundamentalist Christians and there and earlier in my entry I also make it clear (or I thought I had) that I am referring to the fundamentalists variety. So its not so much that these people are Christian but fundamentalists.

  13. Agrees, my apology. I understood your meaning, but I am just afraid that people might lift it out of context, like what I just did.

    Just my 2 cents.

  15. WAS a born again Christian 25 years ago - When I was encouraged to smash up those "idol object of worship" in my parents home, I realised something is very wrong. I was discourage to acknowledge my parents as my "real father" would be Jesus himself.

I love Jesus, but I feel sad for him that people misunderstand his intention or teaching.

No where in the Holy Bible states something of this nature, but the pastor insisted on the smashing part.

I hate my biological father back then for he would not listen to God and will be condemn in hell (according to my ex-pastor). Only when death separated us I began to look back. He is the greatest GOD, he "created" me! I have to live to suffer till this very day, as it's too late to ask for forgiveness, yet I attended church to seek forgiveness for my sin?

Are we following God's word or human emotion at play. Hence, I decided not to be a puppet. How can one learn to hate when love is all we preach or should I say, project to the public.

If God create us equal, why are people born in different part of the world, some rich, some poor. I believe this has something to do with Karma. In different view, it would be a test of faith by God. Good for you if you are in a rich country, but not so fortunate for those who have to think of their next meal, test of faith with a hungry stomach for days? Nah, I'll think of food!

As a yoga teacher myself, I have Muslim and Christian students alike, but none feel otherwise about the recent controversy on Yoga. Claiming that certain poses invoke certain spirit to enter our body. How about holy ghost? Are they not part of the spiritual world too?

I wish Jesus is still alive to witness all these mess created by his own disciples, after all, who pen down the words he preach? Human...

  18. I do not understand why Christians are bearing the brunt of the blame.

Your logic about "presumably what homosexuals do in the privacy of their own bedrooms is of particular interest to the COOS" is flawed.

    How about something like:
"Terrorist making bombs in their house - why should the government care? It is in the privacy of their own bedrooms. Why is it for particular interest to the government? Maybe they just wanted to make the bomb for the fun of it"?

I have written an article on my blog. Would appreciate any comments on my stand.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dear Jtjm,
Terrorists making bombs in the privacy of their home would and should be of concern to a government because terrorists are, by definition, people who use terror to promote their agendas and because bombs are devices that explode, usually with the intention of destroying property and/or lives. And even if they were making a bomb 'for fun', such devices are unstable and apt to go off unexpected. Even you must be able to see the difference between that and two consenting adults, of whatever sexual orientation, doing something in the privacy of their bedrooms.
I perused your blog and liked the poem, especially the part that read 'all morals are gone.' I agree. Why just the other day I read about a group of people who used secretive, sneaky, underhand tricks to take over another group. What's the world coming to!

  20. Hmm...

I guess Buddhist Afghanistan, Kashmir, etc. etc. would disagree with you that "the guy in a cave" is less dangerous than some outspoken verbally (!) harassing Christians...as of late, I haven't seen a fundamentalist Christian blow up a school bus of children.

It all depends on what you understand as fundamentalist, I guess.

But having being around Christians a lot, sure, their missionary zeal can get annoying - good for practicing patience and your ability to explain the wisdom of the Buddha's Dhamma!

But I would never put them on the same level let alone say their intentions are worse than radical Islam which hates Buddhism (because it stands for the exact opposite) and they demonstrated that pretty strongly from 900 AD to 1400 AD wiping out one Buddhist nation after the other.

    Good luck talking to them!

Muslim Fundamentalist: Might cut off your head.

Hmmm, who would I prefer to meet?

You can't really be that naive when it comes to Christian fundamentalists and the violence they have committed, right?

When you said the worst they can do is try and convert you.... well, that's the sticky part. Christians have committed just as hanious of acts as any Muslim fundamentalist has done.

  23. Thank you for injecting some humour with your tongue-in-cheek observations. Much needed considering I'm getting more depressed by the day, reading those ST Forum and other online forums where name calling and accusations about "satanic agenda" are the order of the day. it thoroughly amazes me that when someone doesn't agree with their fundamentalist beliefs, that person has a pact with Mr Satan himself (I myself have not had the honour of being in the same boardroom as him yet, damn! Still, in their books I'm no doubt going to his hell so it's just a matter of time I find out how this elusive Satan looks like.).
By the way, since you must meet and guide so many Buddhist believers, can you please enlighten me on this: do any of us actually walk around telling others that leading a certain lifestyle will accumulate bad karma and so they will come back as a pig or cockroach?

  24. Dear Annster
If by 'us' you mean Buddhists, my experience tells me 'no'. I think Buddhists generally have a more considered, thoughtful and respectful attitude to views and behaviour different from what they think are correct - either that or they are indifferent. When was the last time a Buddhist approached you in the street or knocked on your door trying to convince you that you needed to be saved?

  25. Dear Dhammika,

The problem in this situation is people like you - and me - tolerating the intolerant for far too long. For most of the world that has a non-Abrahamic theology - whether it be pantheism, paganism, dharmic paths or others - we still fall for the bogey that it is only the fundamentalist adherents of (insert "us vs them" religion) that matter.

This is our fundamental mistake. If the European racism of a 100 years ago was wrong on the face of it, to have thought that one class of humans were better and had to civilize another, then it is time to defang every religion that has a "we are better than them" mentality and therefore tries to convert.

Who are we kidding - people of certain faiths, no matter how close they are to us as friends or colleagues, do believe that we are wrong to bow to our idols, that we worship "devils" and that we will go to hell. THAT in itself is wrong, not just trying to impose that on unsuspecting others.

I say, do not tolerate this. Expose the (religious) imperialists. Do not just wait for someone to "reveal" their fundamentalist tendency, so that you can shy away and let them trammel others. Make it shameful for people to hold such views. Question them in public. Question their faith. Question why religion should shield bigotry. Be brave.

There are some who say this is "intolerance". They cannot see the difference between "homicide" and "self-defense".

  26. reading your entry and several other pple's entries on the same issue, i felt compelled to contribute some of my thoughts.

ultimately. it is wrong to take over the exco just because one disagree with what the exco is doing. if one disagree with what the govt is doing, does he just take over the govt just like that? on what grounds does he think that he is right and the exco/govt is wrong in the first place?

in a racial and religious harmony place like singapore, the encroachment of religious (or racial views) into secular organisations like AWARE will only serve to break the fabric of these organisations. afterall, right from the establishment of AWARE, its aims were for women's rights, regardless of race, religion and presumably gender preference as it encompasses ALL women. just because some women like apples and apples are bad, do you stop them from eating those apples?

im not going to launch into a tirade against the controversy surrounding half of the new exco (or rather old one now) being in the same church. i do belief that in a religiously harmonious place like singapore, there should be religious tolerance exercised. one should not impose their values on others even though they feel that they are right. yes, christians do not condone homosexuality, but they do not have to resort to drastic and potentially tricky measure of taking over the exco to ensure that women do not fall prey to the stance that AWARE took. moreover, as i mentioned, AWARE is a secular organisation, they have to look at things from an objective and unbiased point of view. i really fear for those women who are homosexuals and who will not be treated like 'women' if the new (old) exco remained. if those women are unhappy with the homosexual stance that AWARE took, go set up a christian organisation on women's rights.

i dont mind actually if life is boring. (: just my few cents worth.

  27. Dear Ven. Shravasti Dhammika,

Following the AWARE saga, as it appear that the tide is going down. Not too long ago, I received an email from my ex-classmate. Perhaps you may wish to comment on this?

    Please enlighten me...

    Dear Ros,

On Wednesday, I attended a talk by an ex-yoga teacher, Mdm
Poh Shon Choy, who sold her yoga centre (earning lots of money
giving yoga lessons) and severed all ties with yoga. She urges us
to inform relatives, friends, Family members, etc., NOT to get
    involved at all.

For those who had taken up yoga lessons (hot yoga, power yoga,
pe-la-tei, so on), repent and ask God for forgiveness.

Many claimed that they only join to keep fit, only doing the exercise
    poses and not meditation.

Christians think it is ok so long they don't participate in the
Meditation part. Mdm Choy explains that the central of Yoga(originated from Hinduism)
is the spirit of Kundalini(spirit Of snake or cobra).

Yoga poses are actually animal poses (e.g. camel, rabbit,).
All these look very normal and harmless, stretching and exercising.
But the danger is, once a person does such poses, the spirit of
Kundalini (the snake is in a coiled position) is stimulated or aroused.
As the persons goes from basic to intermediate to advance stage of
yoga lessons (still not meditation yet), the coiled "snake" will be
aroused further. It will rise and rise further.

There are 7 centres in the human body - Starting from the navel.

The final centre is the part between the eye brows (known to many as
the third eye). When the spirit is aroused to the final centre, the
    third eye will be opened.

This is called the full enlightenment.

The first thing the person sees is demons. For some, they will become
    insane seeing such horrifying demons.

For others, they are not afraid and will have the power to fore-tell other people's health,
problems, luck, etc (like a fortune teller).

In fact, they manipulate and control other people.

The meditation part will come in very subtle.

Mdm Choy said she was approached by a couple who found her contact
from the yellow pages and told her they wanted To teach her new things about yoga.

She was very keen and sat under their teaching. She learnt how to
meditate and it must be done in odd hours of the day (past midnight).
So she tried.. . She actually felt a wriggling feeling in her stomach!
She also mentioned that her third eye was opened.. She could see her own aura
(electric fields in all human beings).

Her turning point came when God caused her spiritual eyes to open -
she witnessed a lady being delivered, wriggling like a snake on the
floor.. Mdm Choy thanked God for being gracious to her; she took 1-2
weeks to be delivered. She knows of a lady who took 3 months to be cleansed!!

It is a sad thing; there is even yoga lessons for children.

In the States, a Methodist started the Christian yoga.
However, there are some believers who still continue, saying that they
find no harm after doing yoga for 3 years.

Mdm Choy says it is our soul that is in danger. The evil one will try
    all ways to ensnare/trap Christians.
Someone in the class raised a question - if we have The Holy Spirit,
how can the spirit of kundalini be aroused?

Mdm Choy replied our God is a holy God, the Holy Spirit will be grieved and will depart.
    God cannot be mocked.

God's spirit left King Saul when he disobeyed God. To God, rebellion
    spirit is witchcraft.

We are not against yoga teachers, yoga students but we are fighting
against powers, principalities in the Spiritual realm..

Let's be on guard, be aware!

    ReplyDelete
  28. What a whole load of rubbish your friend Mdm Choy - just goes to show in this day and age, there are people who are so naive and ignorant, they'll believe anything! Find the truth yourself - there are a lot of false prophets and pharisees out there!

  29. One People, One Nation, One Singapore.

The AWARE Saga - Tip of an Iceberg

First and foremost I want to iterate the fact that I am not anti-Christian. Although I am a Buddhist, some of my best friends belong to the Christian. Some of the nicest people I know and deeply respect are Christians. I respect all religion (disclaimer: New Age groups and death cults aside). Every mainstream religion in existence today has their intrinsic value, historical lineage and cultural providence dating back many centuries. Each religion is beautiful in its own way and has contributed to the growth of human race in one way or another. Singapore is beautiful in that it is a true multi-racial, multi-cultural melting pot. Although countries like Great Britain, USA and Australia can claim multi-racial/cultural make-up, anyone who has been there can tell you that the various ethnic groups do not mix and generally keep to their own community. Singapore is a true melting pot (credit goes to the sacrifice and foresight of our forefathers/leaders, and partially from our geographical limitations) and we cannot take this harmony for granted. Only decades ago, price was paid in blood for this harmony (read Singapore history). It is out of concern for this precious and precarious harmony that I am penning this (and to set straight certain facts which I find disturbing). The author’s intention for this posting is informative and not propagating of any schism/dissent amongst communities.

The AWARE Saga is only the tip of an iceberg. If you are "aware" (pun intended), you should already discern that “Fundamental Christian Groups” (hereafter “FCGs”) have already infiltrated into many sectors of our society.

“Fundamental” in this context refers to Christian groups or any church-based organisations aiming to further their particular brand of Christian faith/ideology (such as their homophobic doctrine in the AWARE Saga) by any means necessary, even if it entails unscrupulous conduct (misrepresentation, lying, fabrication of facts, collaboration, using of undue influence and peer pressure bullying…etc). Such groups are blinded by the righteousness of their views. Their bigotry is only limited by their ignorance (which can be quite impressive). They have no respect for the beliefs and practices of other religion and have no qualms on resorting to underhanded tactics to achieve their agendas. They consist of narrow minded, tunnel vision individuals who cannot tolerate the possibility that other doctrines of salvation exist outside their own system. Convinced by their own righteousness, they are also the most vocal and show blatant insensitivity to others (as you are probably familiar now - coming to your house pointing at your ancestral tablets, condemning you as idol worshipper, minion of Satan, heretic… the list goes on). They do not seem to realise the fundamental fact that the world allows for diversity and their doctrine cannot account for every single thing under in the world (try this - talk to FCGs on dinosaurs, Darwin, evolution or carbon dating for entertainment. Their bible cannot and is unable to explain and account for the above. Be ready for some out-of-the-world self-justifying explanations, in-house science theory or just outright denial).

The use of the term “infiltrated” denotes a certain clandestine element…which unfortunately may change in the near future as evidenced by the AWARE Saga (first stone of an avalanche). That will be unfortunate for our multi-racial and multi-religion country.

FCGs are now almost everywhere (speaking from my experience). In workplaces, schools, NGOs…etc. In particular, they have strong organized presence in tertiary institutions such NUS, NTU and SMU. One need only visit NUS during orientation week to see the mass recruitment and canvassing by churches (don’t forget to collect your free goodie bag from them while you’re there - pretty decent stuffs in there). You got to respect their tenacity and organizational ability. It takes some serious commitments, funding and manpower to get these events up and running.

While I have no issues with religious groups recruiting members, I do have issues as to the METHODS they go about accomplishing that. As a Buddhist myself, I have convinced free-thinkers, atheists and Christians to the Buddhist faith. My methods usually involves explaining key doctrines such as the 4 Noble Truths, the Noble Eight-fold Path and citing certain chapters from the sutras as appropriate to the maturity and mental disposition of the audience.

However, I WILL NOT misrepresent, malign, belittle, condemn or insult the doctrine of another religion. I will also not resort to peer-pressure, career promotion opportunities (or lack thereof), social ostracising or any other forms of social/economical pressure to force someone to convert. Ultimately, the choice belongs to the individual, WITHOUT DURESS.

Sad to say, the same cannot be said of the FCGs.

Hence I sympathise with another blogger in this forum, Jamie.G (April 28, 2009 6:42 AM) when he said:

“especially since I work with a couple of fundamentalists who are over me and if they ever found out that I was Buddhist they would make my job hell.”

Hearing such statements make the heart cold. But as we all know, Jamie is neither the first nor will he be the last to suffer such discrimination. Such discrimination will perpetuate as long as FCGs are around. There are many instances where HR departments in firms were dominated or headed by members of FCGs and they misuse their position to recruit members of their own churches (should be no news to you guys here). Encased within their armor of self-righteousness, they believe they are doing God’s work and fulfilling a greater good. Call it what you will, peer-pressure, social manipulating...etc. Such activities are fundamentally wrong. On the other hand, you will be seriously hard-pressed to find a Buddhist bullying someone to convert, failing that, make their work-life hell. Well, you won’t find such reservations from the FCGs as Jamie can attest. FCGs are “Social Terrorists”. Their use of social/economic pressure tactics are as detestable as those fundamental jihadists who threaten people with bombs. They disrupt harmony and destroy good will wherever they go. They create schism within the society with their over-the-board aggressive tactics and blatant disregard for others.

Good news: FCGs are still minority in Singapore. Majority of us are still Taoists, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, atheists, freethinkers…etc.

Bad news: FCGs are growing and growing at an alarming rate. Beside their phenomenal growth, another disturbing trend is their social composition (we touch on that later). Many of these FCGs started small as cell-groups formed in churches, in particular, some of the new mega churches which are very aggressive in their recruitment and preaching. Just look at some of the new mega churches around (no names given here for obvious reasons - but you know the ones I’m referring to if you are reading this. Recently one of them managed to obtain a breathtaking sum of donation in record time). Unbeknown to majority of their current followers, some of them used to be ostracised and condemned as unorthodox by local mainstream Christianity in the past, and have grown to epic proportion only during the last decade.

The reason behind their rapid growth is simple. They have adopted the aggressive viral evangelical structure that is common in the USA. They have a single-minded determination to growth big. They know that once you have the numbers, you have the strength and voice to be heard – and they are right. Members are encouraged to recruit more members. Members of the church are indoctrinated and instructed to bring their friends, family, relatives, colleagues and even strangers to the church (their zeal put MLM recruiters and insurance agents to shame). Members are further indoctrinated to associate only with people of same faith. They are also encouraged to form cell-groups to meet up at least once a week beside Sunday services. Prima facie, this seems harmless. However, if you scrutinise the system, it is actually a very powerful and insidious form of social manipulation. This system slowly but surely restrict the social circle of their members to only people of the same faith. It also inadvertently forces individuals to conform to the teachings and belief of that group due to mutual social reinforcement and unhealthy peer-pressure. Truly insidious, truly detestable.

Another thing going for them is this – they are absolutely convinced in the sanctity of their cause, hence they do not hesitate in speaking up and may appear to be radiating confidence. This will impress and mislead the gullible/impressionable as they do not know better. By now, I’m sure that you know FCGs have no reservations on condemning the doctrines of other religion on which they have scant/non-existence knowledge. (Interesting, it is the ignorant who are most confident. Top scientists like Einstein and Stephen Hawking do not deal in absolutes; they know that the universe contains and likes to withhold its mysteries. Medical researchers do not guarantee the efficiency of their drugs – but you have no problem finding dodgy salesmen who guarantee that their magnetic pillow/snake oil products cure all aliments from high blood pressure to ED).

Some of the more extreme groups even cause families to break up if they cannot convert their family members (this is old news). Another disturbing trend is that they are practising selective aggressive recruitment within certain strata of our society. Checkout the Medicine/Dentistry/Law faculties in our local institutions (sorry no more details – but some of you guys know what I’m talking about). They are smart. They know that once you have Caesar in your palm, Rome will fall in line. Converting the potential future elites of the country while they are young and impressionable will ensure their perpetuity and success. Such trend, unchecked can only lead to disaster.

Yes. I can hear voices of dissent. Some of you probably can’t wait to post your rebuttals stating that Christians are peace loving…etc. But before you go about doing that, take note that the Christians I refer to are the FCGs as defined in paragraph 3, not the nice church goers whom I count amongst my best friends (they have issues with their errant brothers/sisters but are too nice and docile to speak up).

And finally, to the issue of Christianity being a benign and peaceful religion. Wake up (and take up that history book again). Anyone who says that is seriously discrediting one of the bloodiest religions in history. Nothing to be ashamed about here, if it is your legacy, accept it. We are not condemning or pointing any accusations here. Any religion that has been around for a sufficiently long time will have its share of bloody conflicts in history. Buddhism has it share of blood from the recent Sino-Tibet issue. There is nothing to be ashamed about as conflict is intrinsic to the ebb and flow of mankind’s struggle for survival. Kingdoms go to war, inevitable clash of thoughts occurs and the fundamental concept of scarcity ensures that we will always see war. However, denial of facts seems to be the hallmark of FCGs. They are extremely defensive and will fight with the vigour of a cornered Jack Russell. Countless times have I hear people peaching that Christianity is the most prefect, only truth, only path to…while other religion are superstitious with backward outdated beliefs…etc.

Those misguided individuals have never heard of the Inquisition. They never heard of the Father of Modern Physics, Galileo Galilei. They also never heard of the exciting witch hunts and nice bonfire parties accompanied by burning-at-stake which occupied much of Europe’s spare time from the 12th to 19th Century. The inquisition started with the Medieval Inquisition (1184- 1230s) and progressed through the Spanish Inquisition (1478-1834), the Portuguese Inquisition (1536-1821) and finally the Roman Inquisition (1542- ~1860 ). The aim of the inquisition was to keep the church in power by torturing and killing off unbelievers, heretics (Yes. You and me) and basically anyone with the common sense to disagree with their nonsense and think for themselves.

Those inclined should read the Malleus Maleficarum 1486 available in all its glory/gory details from the Cornell University Library (http://digital.library.cornell.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=witch;cc=witch;view=toc;subview=short;idno=wit060). Keep in mind that this is not a storybook, hundreds of thousands perished via the doctrine and tortures prescribed within.

It would also probably be too much to think that members of the FCGs have any knowledge of the Protestant Movement by Martin Luther and his Ninety-Five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences. From my conversation with them, majority do not even know their root and historical providence. Absolute denial of factual evidence and ignorance seems to be the prerequisites for membership in FCGs.

Unsurprisingly, most members and recruits of the FCGs also have no idea of what they are denouncing. Sadly, this seems to be inevitable as youngsters disconnect from their cultural roots and mother tongue. Majority of their members are Chinese teenagers. From my conversations with them, many of them claimed to be grateful to be liberated from the “superstitious” and “backward” Buddhist/Taoist religion their parents belong to. However, if you ask them what is Buddhism or Taoism, they can only give you hazy answers such as idol worshipping, incense and paper burning rituals. Try this - Find a newly converted FCG member and talk to him/her. Ask him what his previous religion was before he converted. High possibility it will be Buddhism/Taoism if he is Chinese. Then ask him, what are the 4 Noble Truths and Noble Eight-fold Path. These are the basic knowledge of Buddhism. From my countless (maybe not countless, but definitely quite a number) experience, he will know NOTHING about them.

Therefore it is my belief that as Buddhists, it is our responsibility to engage and acquit ourselves with the Dharma. Educated Buddhists proficient in dharma knowledge must learn to speak up when it is appropriate. They must also impart and share dharma knowledge with the elderly Buddhist population who may only know about incense burning and other superficial practices. Learn from the FCGs (Yes. They have positive points too) and start some form of systematic Buddhist education courses in temples on Sunday. I think a few big temples are doing that now. Bring your family and friends to attend these courses when they are available. We must take active steps to ensure that our sons and daughters are firmly entrenched and fortified with proper dharma knowledge. What they do subsequently is up to them. But we have a duty to ourselves and society to at the very least, establish them in the proper Dharma whilst they are still young. Also read the sutras and consult your Bhante on the Nikayas. Many of the misguided and uninformed assertions/claims made by the FCGs in general or against Buddhism are easily exposed and defeated by the knowledge in the Sutras.

Only through wisdom is ignorance banished.

  30. Dear Vernon,

I agree mostly, but disagree that this is an issue with FCGs. The FCGs did not make up their beliefs - they just chose to be stricter in interpreting WHAT IS ALREADY WRITTEN in their scriptures, just as fundamentalist Muslims do.

We can, and must, push against the ideology, not just the egregious fundamentalist manifestation of it. Read my comment and the reference to imperialism/racism - you cannot condone that one race/culture feels superior to another if it *only* indulges in patronization and condescension (as opposed to active annihilation of other cultures) or just because it avoids active subjugation.

Wrong is wrong - there are no degrees here, and going down that path is exactly why we are now in the fight we are in.

The existence of "Us versus Them" doctrines in itself is wrong. And to those that call me intolerance, I am more than happy for each and every person in this world to have his/her own personal religion or belief system. I can live with that, but not with systems that fundamentally believe mine is wrong.

  32. Dear brothers in Budhadharma,
I confess that I felt baffled in reading your comments to Aware saga. It seems that people who defended openly and courageously the private and public morality against present customs, are bad and intolerants and that the defense of liberal morality and even libertinism is a right attitude and so is the gay-culture, whose moral qualities can be seen in their public shows and in the level of internet expression. I don’t see anything against Buddhadharma in the ideas and proposals expressed by Dr Thio. Instead her enemies, whose harsh intolerance can’t be denied have exactly the opposite attitude, that is the modern, mainly American, form of what at Buddha’s time was called Carvaka philosophy, that is materialism, hedonism, egoism rationalized. I don’t defend Christian fundamentalism ideas (not even does she in her battle against moral corruption…), but certainly “Darwinism” is a conviction about human life values whose sense is not different from the defense of egoism by side of Carvaka, that is the statement of its advantages in survival as a natural evolutionary mechanism. Liberal philosophy and life stile are the opposite of Buddhadharma. Please, don’t talk about homophobia, sexuophobia and other similar epithets. Danger is elsewhere. Let’s open our eyes. There is an army of sexual tourists, both etero and homo, and their agencies, of girl escorts and their pimps in Singapore. They give a big contribution to the economy of the city. Have we to tolerate this world and attack Dr Thio’s “fundamentalism”? If “fundamentalism” means “strong consistence” in moral conviction in theory and practice, Buddhadharma can be only fundamentalist and reject the evil at individual and social levels. Let’s respect and help people who move astray . But, please, let’s prevent us from being infected by their aberration. Let’s love the sinners in the only possible way: through not loving their sins.
    Piergiorgio Muzi

  33. Vernon: thanks.

Piergiorgio: interesting points. I think the view on homophobia is irrelevant. The point is that some conscientious people think they are so right they need to see it in spheres beyond their personal life.

If a theology or belief system believes in "live and let live", I have no issues with it being fundamentalist. Many Dharmic religions did not always practise this philosophy, btw, so this is not a free pass to anyone.

The issue is, when someone's belief system is all or nothing - and leaves no room for other people's alternative belief system - then the only thing fundamental about those systems is that it is fundamentally wrong.
